  • Episode 289: Board Knobs and Tomb Sticks - Eyal Levi interview (Audiohammer Studios): 11/9/13
Behind every great Metal record is an even greater Metal dude busting his butt to make a great record sound even greater. Record producers are the unsung heroes of our beloved genre. Sure, it takes a talented band to make our fave tunes. But it takes an equally talented producer with a grand vision and keen ear to bring that music out for our listening pleasure. AUDIOHAMMER STUDIOS is a major player in the industry. One of the mainmen turning the knobs is producer EYAL LEVI. Mr. Levi first caught our attention swinging the axe for DAATH and now produces some our fave albums and artists. Always on the lookout for unique ideas and guests, we pulled him away from his knobs and dials long enough to discuss his online classes, his career as a musician, and his work at the studio. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bitch about cancelled tours and the BROKEN HOPE soap opera. We crank some BH, SIX FEET UNDER, BATTLECROSS, and introduce Spain's CORELYN in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 288: Twin Sons, Different Mothers: 11/1/13
Heavy metal fans for the most part are more than just a bunch of people who have something superficial in common. Heavy Metal is a brotherhood, a kinship, something you just don't get in any other genre of music. With that said, we just love making new friends within our beloved genre and there's no better way than sitting down and discussing Heavy Metal. TWIN CITIES METAL is a weblog based out of Minnesota U.S.A. that has a local focus but a flavor for Metaldom as a whole. Blogmaster Robert was cool enough to give us some time from his busy schedule and talk (Metal) shop. After giving us the 411 on his blog, we discussed as much Metal as possible including our recent Exhumed experiences, what we've been cranking lately, and just how much we eerily have in common. Hey, yacking about Metal is something we would've been doing anyway... might as well press "record" first. Horns Up!! • Episode 287: Filthy Comix - Kurt Amacker and Untimely Demise interview: 10/24/13
In keeping with the Halloween spirit, we continue our stroll down The Dark Side of Heavy Street and Metal Avenue. A consistent passer by seems to be British goth/black/thrash metallers CRADLE OF FILTH. Having already conquered the worlds of music and cinema, The Filthy Ones are ready to attack the fine art of the comic book. Being geeks ourselves, this caught our attention. We caught up with writer KURT AMACKER and discussed "Cradle of Filth: The Curse of Venus Aversa", the Kickstarter Project and perks, and why CoF polarize people so much . We also found ourselves in a celebratory mood as Canadian thrashers UNTIMELY DEMISE return to town for the record release party of their latest platter "Systematic Eradication". Great record, Boys! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we make good on our annual hockey wager and mourn the loss of a key Snowy's Angel. Horns Up!!! • Episode 286: Color Our Metal Blackened - Dire Omen interview: 10/19/13
It's that time of the year again. The Halloween season is in full effect and around here, the programming tends to reflect the atmosphere. What better way to celebrate the Dark Side of our beloved genre than crank a cauldron full of Black Metal and introduce Metaldom to a brand new act. Canuck black metallers DIRE OMEN recently signed onto Dark Descent Records and are poised to kick Old Scratch himself off the throne. When we caught up with the band, they gave us the 411 and we put them to the test with other "Omen" trivia. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we talk our recent Gwar live experience, discuss the recent Nachtmystium situation, and spill a sacrifical blood bucket of Watain, Immortal, Black Witchery, Neckrofilth, Wilt, Dragonlord, Cradle of Filth, and the new Inquisition. • Episode 285: Iron Guts Lemay - Gorguts interview: 10/13/13
The "Whys and Wherefores" of the starting point of Death Metal will always be subjective. It's a safe bet though that Canada's truest entrance into the Death realm was with the discovery of Quebec's GORGUTS. Founded by mastermind Luc Lemay, Gorguts has ruled the Canadian roost for over two decades with no sign of relenting. Promoting their brilliant new record "Colored Sands", we recently caught up with Mr. Lemay at the fabled Noctis Festival. We discussed the beautiful but intricate concept behind the record, the band's killer new line up, their Season Of Mist label, and add confusion to the word "color" (or is it "colour"?). Musically, we kick off the Halloween season we some GHOUL, ENTRAILS, EXHUMED, DEVOURMENT, GENERAL SURGERY and introduce Canuck tech-death thrashers ENTITY in our Indie Spotlight. French Horns Up!!! • Episode 284: What happens at Noctis...: 10/5/13
Road trip!!! A rite of passage in every (not so) young man's life. With the announcement of the 2013 Noctis Festival and Expo to be headlined by the mighty Carcass, we knew we had to make the trip. Hitching a ride with our family members Evil Survives, Wilt and of course, the War On Music Record Label and Shop, we set off for a long weekend of Heavy Metal debauchery and mayhem. Our rag tag caravan returned home battered and bruised but with smiles all around. Apart from rockin' out to some bucket list performances (Girlschool, Possessed, Exciter, the aforementioned Carcass), we shmoozed with a bevy of interesting industry types. And the after parties will go down as stuff of legend. But what happens at Noctis... stays at Noctis. What we can report is highlighted by our sit down with veteran thrashers SACRIFICE. They gave us the once over of decades both on and off the stage. We're already counting down the days til next year. Horns Up!!! • Episode 283: With A Little Help From Our Friends: 09/27/13
With half of the RAM staff working at the Noctis Festival in Calgary this weekend, we put out a call to our fellow Cast Iron Ring podcasters for some support. Answering the Metal Call of Duty, our buddies Aaron (Iron City Rocks/Signal To Noise podcasts) and Bob (Shockwaves podcasts) came armed and ready for battle! We talked about our activities from the previous week and discussed what new music has us cranking up the volume knob. Bob told us a little bit more about the INSIDE METAL trailer that he and his cohorts recently released and regaled us with stories from the L.A. scene pre-Hair Metal days. All this and we also manage to poke a little fun at our missing comrade and crank a new CARCASS tune! Horns Up!! • Episode 282: Even A Mutha Could Love - Fleshgod Apocalypse interview: 09/20/13
If you judged a book by it's cover, you'd surmise that Italian metallers FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE were the new (Five) Tenors, albeit with a slight edge. Clad in their Sunday Best, FGA have been terrorizing the nation when we caught up with lead vox/axeman Tommaso Riccardi. Looking very different from his stage persona, Mr. Riccardi gives us his word on their new Nuclear Blast recording "Labyrinth", the origins of their unique tuxedo gimmick, and what's to come in the Fleshgod camp. Such nice guys even your Mom would approve... until they start playing. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we get stoked over some new releases, really push the new GORGUTS record, and for our Indie Spotlight we venture out into our own backyard to introduce the awesomelly monickered ABDOMEN CANVAS. • Episode 281: Queen of the Castle - Queen of the Castle interview: 09/13/13
As loyal subjects of the most glorious Heavy Metal, it is our honour and duty to serve. Recently, rock n' roll royalty in the form of doom metallers CASTLE paid a visit to our village. Blown away by the awesomeness that is their latest Prosthetic Records effort "Blacklands," we found ourselves humbled in the presence of the Queen Of The Castle, bassist/vocalist Elizabeth Blackwell. We discussed said record, the whole "occult" metal thingy, and cleared up some self-induced controversy concerning this years Juno awards. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss what we've been cranking lately, get up on our soapbox inspired by the PENTAGRAM documentary, and introduce T.O. bashers ABYSS in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 280: Triple Excellent - Children of Bodom, Attika 7, Butcher Babies interview: 09/6/13
If one is good, then three must be 3X the fun. The recent Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Tour had us super busy. We spoke to some of the best bands around today and captured some photographic evidence of the greatness. All the while trying to soak in as much as possible. Now the fruits of our labour can be shared with all of Metaldom. The artists we spoke with are in three distinct points in their careers. BIOHAZARD mainman/ATTIKA 7's Evan Seinfeld has earned his legendary status. CHILDREN OF BODOM's Roope Latvala is a veteran currently ruling the Metal roost. And the BUTCHER BABIES are young guns ablazin', ready to storm the next level. Each offer their view from their corner of the world. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we mourn the loss of Eyehategod drummer Joey LaCaze and we take the Canadian government to task. Three Horns Up!!! • Episode 279: Instrumetal - The Aristocrats interview: 08/29/13
"We'll let the music do the talking" is an old rock n' roll cliche. A small percentage of bands mean it literally, doing away with the idea of vocals and do what we call "instrumetal". With emphasis resting solely on instrumentation, these artists truly allow their abilities to shine. The sub-genre also seems to attract a higher calibre of talent as well. Prog/fusion rock trio THE ARISTOCRATS are a fine example. Individually, they have shared time with Steve Vai, Kreator, Necrophagist, and 80s AOR supergroup Asia. Collectively, they're a fascinating interview. Musically, we crank The 'Crats and fellow instrumetal breathren ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF, MAHOGANY HEAD GRENADE, EAGLE CLAW and feature UK thrashers REZINWOLF in our Indie Spotlight. All this making it one of those times to keep our ears open and mouths shut. Horns Up!! • Episode 278: Already In(to) Trouble - Trouble interview: 08/23/13
The influence of the mighty Black Sabbath on Heavy Metal cannot be denied. Most would say that they are the starting point of Metaldom. No other of Metal's subgenres can boast the Sabbath sound more than Doom Metal. Most would claim the starting point of Doom to lay with the legendary TROUBLE. Our personal interest in Trouble dates back to their debut album, stemming from the early days of the infamous Banzai Records (in Canada, at least). We were super stoked to catch up with one of the original Troublemakers in guitarist Rick Wartell. We discuss the new album "The Distortion Field", new vocalist Kyle Thomas, and a (not so) famous cable access TV special that they starred in. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we go over what's quite possibly our last kick at a KISS concert and introduce old schoolers DEMONS OF OLD METAL in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!! • Episode 277: Vreid The Lightning - Vreid interview: 08/18/13
After wrestling with the proper pronunciation of their monicker, Metaldom may be surprised to find out that Norway's VREID are veterans of the Extreme Metal underground. Having found a home within the wicked world of Black Metal, Vreid cut their own path with their unique brand of "black and roll". Promoting their sixth platter "Welcome Farewell" on Indie Recordings, we caught up with founder/bassist Hváll and he straightened everything out regarding his awesome band. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss some new releases, vent some frustrations, and introduce Russia's ENGAGE AT WILL in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!! • Episode 276: Metal Festival Fest: 08/9/13
During the hot summer months, a major part of Mr. Metalhead's concert itinerary is the travelling circus known as the Metal festival. The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival and Gigantour caravans are crossing the continent and RAM was front row/center. With the Herculean task of discussing our festival experiences before us, we knew we were going to have to call in reinforcements. Aaron from Iron City Rocks/Signal To Noise extensively covered Mayhem and Mrs. White rocked out hard at Gigantour. Both were elated to join us for a lively discussion on the many highs of our festival-ing. This is something we would've been doing anyway... might as well press "Record" first. Horns Up!! • Episode 275: One Man Sub-Subgenre Band - Melechesch interview: 08/2/13
One of Heavy Metal's many different strong points is the many different styles and sounds that make up many different subgenres. The odd band here and there manages to take the concept one step further and create their own sub-subgenre. Isreali black metal veterans MELECHESH are the one and only "Assyrian Metal" band. Guitarist/vocalist Ashmedi has no problem educating us about his one-band-musical-island, discussing their "Epigenesis" record, the Isreali metal scene, and just what the hell a "melechesh" is. The man has a piece of our beloved genre all his own. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss and crank the new CARCASS, Canadian black metallers WEAPON, and rant about some more PUSSY RIOT drama. All this and more, as we talk to death thrashers XUL in our extended Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!! • Episode 274: Stricken By Striker - Striker interview: 07/27/13
A half dozen or so years upon it, it's becoming very apparent that the trad-metal movement is no longer strictly "traditional" (per se) anymore. This awesome wave of young guns heavily influenced by the Metal heroes of yesteryear are a major part of our beloved genre's here and now. Canadian bashers STRIKER recently hit the road to promote their latest molten platter "Armed To The Teeth", courtesy of Napalm Records. Dual axemen Chris Segger and Tim Brown gave us the lowdown, discussing said record, working with producer extraordinaire Micheal Wagener, and supporting the mighty METALLICA in their own backyard. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss Billboard finally getting it right, weigh in on the incredible Varg Vickernes sitch, and introduce the UK whatever-punks SNAKES IN THE GRASS in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 273: Snowy's Angels 2013 - Darby Mills (Headpins) and Enabler interview: 07/19/13
More and more in this modern era of heavy music, the Women Of Metal seem to be enjoying an unsurpassed level of acceptance. The decades of trials and tribulations that the fairer sex endured and overcame have almost made segregative celebrations obsolete. Well... almost. 'Round here we like to take a moment to honor the Women of Metal with our annual "Snowy's Angels" episode. In the early 80s, leading the Canadian AOR scene were THE HEADPINS led by one of the original "Snowy's Angel" Darby Mills. Still kickin' ass and takin' names on the road, rock diva Darby kept us on the edge of our seats with her account of that tumultuous era. She regales us with stories of touring with KISS and QUIET RIOT among many other things. More or less at the beginning of their rock n roll journey, hardcore bashers ENABLER are making memories of their own. We eargerly gave bassist Amanda Daniels center stage and we got the pleasure of guitarist/vocalist Jeff Lohrber's company as well. Musically, we crank the venomous vixens in THE BUTCHER BABIES, HAEMORRHAGE, THE DONNAS, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, CADAVERIA, THE NEKROMANTIX, the aforementioned Enabler, and of course the almighty DORO. "Fairer Sex", yeah right. Horns Up!! • Episode 272: Immolate The Weak, Immolate The Strong - Immolation interview: 07/12/13
When looking back at 2013, it's going to be a foregone conclusion that a major highlight for a lot of underground Metalheads will be the Decibel Mag tour. With the amazing triple threat lineup of Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Immolation (not to mention kick ass regional supporters), there was no way we were going to be sitting this one out. Having already gone on about it on more than one episode, the Coup De Gras is to have one of said artists in the RAM hot seat. Frontrunners of that awesome early 90s death metal wave, NY's IMMOLATION need no introduction having thrilled us for the past quarter century. Vocalist/bassist Russ Dolan and axeman Rob Vigna proved to be entertaining subjects discussing the brilliant new album, their "legendary" status, and reassure us there's plenty of gas left in the tank. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we review the new Philip H. Anselmo and The Illegals record, hype the new charity driven Kiss Alive touring project, and introduce instrumetal act THE NOCTURNAL CHAOS in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up, you Beautiful MFers. • Episode 271: The Metal Leaf, Part Deux - Blood Ceremony and Terrorist interviews: 07/4/13
It's not that Canucks are especially patriotic... but we enjoyed last week's Canada Day special so much that we decided to carry on the conversation for another week. Of course we had to bring along some Canadian friends to help celebrate. The Occult Metal subgenre has a stranglehold on Metaldom's attention right now. Rise Above/Metal Blade recording artists BLOOD CEREMONY are coven favorites. Guitarist/founder Sean Kennedy and vox/organ/flute Alia O'Brien recently hung out with us and gave us the lowdown on their section of The Dark Side. On the opposite end of the Metal spectrum are whatevercore specialists TERRORIST. We recently caught up with Axe/vox Fuckface at the War On Music shop just moments before rocking out. Of course, no episode of this nature would be complete without showing off some of Canada's finest including OBLIVEON, BLINDED BY FAITH, BAPTISTS, and SEBASTIAN BACH. Horns up, Hosers. • Episode 270: The Metal Leaf - Bison BC interview: 06/28/13
The Great White North has it's share of misunderstood stereotypes. Sure, we love our hockey and maple syrup but we also have a rich pop culture heritage as well. Canada's involvement with hard rock/heavy metal dates almost back to the conception of our beloved genre. With the Canada Day (and Quebec Day, for that matter) holiday just around the corner, we're going to acknowledge our great nation in our own traditional manner. Every year we take some time to expose some of our artists to our international audience. Metal Blade and War On Music recording artists BISON BC proudly wave the Metal Leaf. We recently caught up with vox/axe Dan And to discuss their latest disc, the legal mumbo jumbo behind their monicker, and just how Canuck they are, eh. We also throw all sense of semblence out the window and crank some NECRONOMICON, BEYOND CREATION, AUROCH, BESIEGED, the returning veterans SWORD, LES ÉKORCHÉS, ANONYMUS, Lord Worm's new blackened project RAGE NUCLÉAIRE, the Juno award winning KEN MODE, and SASS JORDAN(!!). • Episode 269: Goathorns Up! - Goatwhore interview: 06/23/13
Hard rockers of all varieties are unique beings. It's a form of expression that demands to be colored outside the lines and marched to the beat of it's own drummer. Veteran metallers GOATWHORE take the concept one step further. New Orleans has a strong aggressive music scene known for it's stoner/doom sounds. Amidst all the smoke and sludge, Goatwhore is carving out their own piece of the NOLA pie with their brand of blackened thrash. Constantly touring, we slowed vox Ben Falgoust down enough to give us a few minutes discussing their latest record, artistic misconceptions, and their work with Erik Rutan. "When life hands you a lemon... blah, blah, blah". Lemonade is good but 'round here we prefer something a little harder. Namely Nuclear Blast recording artists ARSIS. When the legendary Hypocrisy had to pull out of their recent North American trek, Arsis saw it as an opportunity to turn it up a notch. While contending with overzealous fans, we caught up with the band in the parking lot to discuss the new album and their spot in the metal world. • Episode 267: Go Vikings! - Ensiferum and The Rabid Whole interview: 06/11/13
According to popular North American history books, the Vikings were a proud group of warriors notorious throughout the world for invading and pillaging of foreign lands. Fast forward a dozen centuries and the current Heavy Metal scene has it's own update on Viking culture. Paganfest is an annual traveling caravan of "Viking/folk" metallers that perform their own brand of raping and pillaging - namely on a rock n' roll stage hopefully near you. For the last couple years, Paganfest has been headlined by Finnish rockers ENSIFERUM. Axeman and vox Petri Lindroos sat down with us to discuss the festival, their latest record "Unsung Heroes", and just what the Hades an "ensiferum" is. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss our own brand of weekend debauchery, the lot going on with drummers, and (re)introduce electro metallers THE RABID WHOLE in our Extended Indie Spotlight. • Episode 266: Your Favorite Band's Favorite Band - Doom and Putrescense interview: 05/25/13
Heavy Metal history was recently made and once again, RAM is stoked to be there to cover it. The legendary UK crustpunkers DOOM were major players in the mid-to-late 80s emergence of the grindcore scene and continue to have major influence in the aggressive underground music scene. Doom is your favorite band's favorite band. Only recently did the band cross the Canadian border for the first time and RAM was fortunte to catch up with the entire band for an amazing chat that covers more than 25 years of madness. The irony that Doom were in town the same day Maggie Thatcher passed away didn't escape our notice either. Another Metal milestone is the "Decade Of Defecation" recently celebrated by Canadian grinders PUTRESCENCE. Skinbeater Cory Thomas (UNTIMELY DEMISE) is a great friend of the show and RAM and Putrescence go back to Day One. So we're obviously thrilled to help commemorate this event by discussing the past decade and the decades to come. Congrats, Dudes! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we gear up for the new Megadeth record, rant about the new "Iron Man 3" flick, and introduce the very appropiate English political thrashers DISHONOUR THE CROWN in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 265: (Metal's) Future's So Bright... - Hatchet and Fall City Fall interview: 05/17/13
Dedicating ourselves to producing unique programming like RAM produces it's own unique rewards. It's awesome chatting with Metaldom's veteran outfits as they bring a vast wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Equally thrilling though is the opportunity to introduce some of the genre's Young Guns to our Beautiful M'Fers. San Francisco's HATCHET and Canada's FALL CITY FALL are future bright spots at opposite ends of the Metal spectrum. Hatchet are front runners for the new generation of Bay Area bashers. We sat down with the whole band and discussed their new disc and paid homage to the pioneers before them, all with a youth exuberance we found quite inspiring. Fall City Fall are a brilliant new band tearing up the metalcore/hardcore scene and Victory Records is squarely behind their new "Victus" album. Vocalist Nathan Zorn proved to be wise beyond his years discussing life in the underground and some responsibilities therein. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we chime in on the unbelievable Tim Lambesis situation and take Vince Neil to task. Metal's future so bright I gotta... Nah not gonna go there. Horns Up!!! • Episode 264: Picked Our Poison - Chris Potter interview: 05/11/13
At the end of the day, all a man truly has is his word. We recently found ourselves on the wrong end of an ill advised sports related friendly wager. As a result, we've taken the task of going through the good, the bad, and the pretty of 80s glam rockers POISON. As a true champion of hair metal, Poison were generally met with more jeers than cheers around here over the years. But regardless, the conversation definitely lit a fire under our collective ass. But all is not lost. RAM enjoys presenting unique ideas and guests. Veteran Canadian TV actor CHRIS POTTER recently gave us a moment of his time. Mr. Potter is known for more mainstream affairs like the TV shows "Heartland' and "Return To Kung Fu", but the man is a rock n' roller at heart. We discuss his involvement with the up coming GODDO rockumentary, gave us his take on the hey-day of Canadian hard rock, and we show off the War On Music record shop to him. All this and, of course, we mourn with the rest of Metaldom the passing of one of the all time greats. Horns up Forever, JEFF HANNEMAN!! • Episode 263: The Ground Up - Soilwork interview: 05/4/13
The path to success for Swedish death/thrash legends SOILWORK is a life lesson for everyone in all walks of life. Starting with their familiar but unique monicker (meaning "working from the ground up"), the band has earned everything the old fashioned way: through hard work and metric buttload of talent. Currently touring their ninth album, iconic bassist Ola Flink has been right there for them all. We recently caught up with Mr. Flink who gave us the 411 on all the current whys and wherefores in the Soilwork camp, particularily the incredible undertaking that is the new double LP "The Living Infinite". Whew! Who says less is more! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we share in Metaldom's recent victories at awards ceremonies and the cash register. • Episode 262: Goddosmacked - Goddo interview: 04/27/13
Regular listeners of RAM have ben recently regaled with stories of rock n' roll documentaries and debauchery. It all culminates with this episode. GODDO are hard rock legends that ruled the Canadian AOR roost in the late 70s and early 80s. Fronted by mastermind Greg Godovitz, the band is still rockin' out in their sixties and are the most active they've been in over a decade. They recently came through town shooting their upcoming documentary and RAM got in on the act. During our sit down with Mr. Godovitz, we formed a symbiotic relationship while they ran the video cameras. What followed was a rock n' roll lesson we'll never forget. Musically, we crank some latter day Goddo and introduce Godovitz' new solo material to a whole new audience of music maniacs. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss what's been spinning in our stereos and what's been keeping us out at all hours of the night. • Episode 261: Blackened - Marduk interview: 04/19/13
RAM is continuing our promise to the Metal world. You keep bringing us these legendary underground artists to us and we'll keep bringing them to you in our own fashion. Swedish black metallers MARDUK have been at the top of the second wave of Black Metal food chain for over two decades. Touring the Hell out of their latest masterpiece "Serpent Sermon", they recently returned through town and we caught up with vocalist Morgan Steinmeyer Hakansson. We discussed the new record, their recent hometown gold status, and the awesome DEATH WOLF side project. Having to crane our necks to look eye to eye with the man, we see just how larger than life he is. Looking to impress Mr. Hakansson with some homegrown talent, we feature atmospheric black metallers WILT in another extended Indie Spotlight right before they commenced their first national tour. • Episode 260: Beast of a Band - Warbeast interview: 04/14/13
D.I.Y. indie internet radio is balanced with pros and cons. The most prominent pro is the creative freedom it affords. We have nothing or nobody to be accountable to other than our own personal tastes and ideals. So when a particular band that we really dig comes down the Metal pipe, we can go crazy about them. Housecore Records upstarts WARBEAST is one beast of a band and their latest record "Destroy" is an early candidate for Album Of the Year. Beastly vox Bruce Corbitt was more than happy to give us a few minutes to discuss the new album, the upcoming tour with GWAR, and some great memories of his friend Mike Scaccia. • Episode 259: Slaves to The Sounds - Enslaved interview: 04/5/13
Pioneering Norwegian black/prog outfit ENSLAVED need very little of an introduction or a fancy-schmancy write up. When a man like bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson talks, Metaldom learns. So when we recently caught up with Mr. Kjellson, we were eager for an education from the man. We discussed their latest opus "Riitiir", the recent popularization of Thor, and just who is an Enslaved fan in 2013. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss bands crashing at our places and RAM going Hollywood. We also sit down with Minnesota doomsters VULGAARI in an extended Indie Spotlight. • Episode 258: Royal VViseguys - Royal Thunder and Ancient Wisdom interview: 04/2/13
Every great band has a humble beginning. The first phase to rock n' roll superstardom is the unsigned/indie phase. The next step is seemingly small but overwhelmingly important: Said band gets signed and records their first album to an eager but meager hard music underground. Now the real work begins. Through relentless touring and promotion (with little payoff), hopefully the band will create a buzz about them. Two bands atop the "buzz band" bin are Relapse's ROYAL THUNDER and Prosthetic's ANCIENT VVISDOM. Each band brings their own unique morsel to the musical dinner table and share the feast with us. Royal Thunder axeman Josh Weaver gives us the 411 including their amazing "CVI" record. We harrass Ancient VVisdom vox Nathan Opposition and acoustic ripper Ribs about their unique sound and even uniquer (!) monicker. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we disscuss the upcoming cool summer tours and introduce Ireland's CHOSEN in our Indie Spotlight. The best buzz you get is from great music. Horns Up!! • Episode 257: The Mob Rulz - Adrenaline Mob interview: 03/22/13
In Heavy Metal terminology, the supergroup is the joining of artists from different established bands to write and record as it's own entity. The concept has proven to be both revered and reviled. Fans of the original outfits no doubt welcome the new music while others may be more apprehensive and question the band's dedication to the long haul. Ultimately, it's the tunes that count and that's where supergroup ADRENALINE MOB delivers. Comprised of currents and exes of SYMPHONY-X, DREAM THEATER, and DISTURBED, A-Mob are already off and running. Pushing their new covers album, we recently caught up with axeman Mike Orlando and discussed the origins of the band, their collaboration with Lizzy Hale, and our mutual admiration for Jake E. Lee. Maybe it's a reflection on society today, the current state of the hard music scene, or maybe it's just us. Doom Metal seems to be enjoying a peak right now. One of the big Doom guns is Arkansas' PALLBEARER. The band is developing quite a cult following and their Profound Lore album "Sorrow and Extinction" is flying off the record shelves. Currently touring on an awesome bill featuring the legendary Enslaved headlining, they were more than happy to spread a little good will and cheer our way. In our Indie Spotlight, we introduce Canadian metallers (and game show contestants) OUTLAW RENEGADES. We also get reacquainted with an old friend and say goodbye to a Canadian icon. • Episode 255: The C Word - Unearth and Despise You interview: 03/8/13
For a lot of old school Metalheads and those firmly entrenched in the lower bowels of Metaldom, anything with the "core" suffix is a dirty word. The modern metalcore sound seems to fall in line with the glams, grunges, and nu-metals of yesteryear and seems destined to suffer the same fate. But things aren't all bad. Like heavy metal itself, the "core" tree has sprouted many different branches producing some pretty tasty fruit. Mainstream metalcore marvels UNEARTH are scene originators, with axe slinger Buzz McGrath easily one of the most reconizable figures in Metal. We're totally stoked that we finally caught up with the Dude at their recent stop in town. On the opposite side of the "core" spectrum is powerviolence outfit DESPISE YOU. Vocalist Chris and Guitarist Phil gave us a personal education on the "powerviolence" term and their place in it. Musically, we spin our interview subjects, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, the awesome new DEVOURMENT album, and we feature Australian thrashers DECIMATUS in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 254: Obey Your Radio - Obey The Brave interview: 03/1/13
For dedicated Metalheads, our beloved genre isn't just a passing fancy or background noise. It's a passion, an ideal, and it can be parasitic in the way that it can crawl under your skin and embed itself there for the remainder of the host's days. It's also ironic that prison bars are literally made out of Heavy Metal. Once you're truly locked in, there ain't no getting out. When Canadian deathcore metallers DESPISED ICON decided to throw in the towel, vocalist Alex Erian thought he was done as well. The lure proved too strong. Now with a new band and tweak in sound, Metal has a new conquering hero. OBEY THE BRAVE is on a tear. Their debut record is awesome and they've taken their act on the road. On their recent stop through town, Mr. Erian gave us the 411 on the band: who (and why) they are, where they came from, and where they're going. • Episode 253: From Eternity To Here - Into Eternity interview: 02/22/13
INTO ETERNITY are one of Canada's finest. Despite not having a new album in a helluva long time, they've managed to keep themselves in the hearts and minds of the citizens throughout Metaldom. The so-called "vocalist situation" pertaining to fan favorite vocalist Stu Block is still a hot button topic. Most of the band ganged up on their last stop in town. They gave us the lowdown on everything in the IE camp including touring vocalist Amanda Kiernan. Ms. K. is an immense talent who consistently proves her worth on stage and through her professionalism in this tough situation. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we crank some new IE and we introduce British bashers BURY THE HATCHET in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 251: My Generation's Townsend - Devin Townsend interview Part 1: 02/9/13
Most of the time, the veteran Metal musicians are the easiest interview subjects. They possess the experience, know-how, and generally have thoughts they wish to express to the citizens of Metaldom. DEVIN TOWNSEND recently proved to be such a subject. A Metal mastermind of a myriad of projects, Mr. Townsend has kicked our collective asses over the years. The DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT recently stormed through town and he gave us way more than a moment of his time. So much in fact, we had to split our conversation in two parts. With Devin we basically just had to press "record" and let the man do the talking. It gave us the opportunity to pick our jaws off the floor with what he had to say. • Episode 250: Splitting Time - Untimely Demise and Putrescense interview: 02/2/13
Hardcore followers of underground aggressive music are all too familiar with the concept of the split album. Two different artists share time and expenses and ultimately each takes a side of said release. Saskatchewan thrashers UNTIMELY DEMISE are at the forefront of the Canadian metal scene. Winnipeg grinders PUTRESCENSE have gained a loyal cult following throughout Metaldom's underbelly. On top of all this, both acts have members that are personal friends with RAM. So imagine how stoked we were when it was announced that veteran skin beater Cory Thomas was the new dude behind Untimely Demise! Recently this new supergroup tore up our fair city and gave us the lowdown on the goings on of both groups, giving us the interview equivalent of a split release. Vancouver deathsters XUL feature in our Indie Spotlight proving their worth beyond their Ghostbusters big baddie monicker. • Episode 249: The Winter Of Our Content - Wintersun interview: 01/25/13
January is smack dab in the middle of a long, cold winter. The temperature plummets well below zero turning at least one of our locales into an icy and frigid tundra. To heat things up, a hefty dose of Heavy Metal is in order especially when it comes from a super hot band like Finland's WINTERSUN. Their recent stop in town provided the opportunity to speak to two different members in seperate interviews: first guitar/vox Jari Maenpaa, then bassist Jukka Koskinen. Their spectacular new(ish) album is the first in eight years, so everyone made sure everything in the Wintersun camp was covered... and then some. Musically we crank the brilliant "Time I" album and introduce Dover Pa.'s FROM THESE WOUNDS in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 248: Chrigel And The Varg - Eluveitie and Varg interview: 01/18/13
Celtic/folk metallers ELUVEITIE are no strangers to this show. An amazing band, especially live, that boast an eight person line up that rocks out to a number of non traditional sounds and instruments including the violin, mandolin, harp, whistles, bagpipes, and the hurdy gurdy!??! We first caught up with Eluveitie in early 2012 as vocalist Chrigel Glazman stepped off the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise. The band's recent stop through town was a good time to catch up with Chrigel. This time, he brought along bandmate Anna Murphy to educate us on the aforementioned hurdy gurdy. German support act VARG impressed us enough where we had to feature them as well. Speaking with bassist Managram, still decked out in his battle-worn war paint, just seconds after stepping off the stage proved most interesting. We can't think of kicking off the new year in finer fashion than featuring none other than gore meisters GWAR! For three decades now, they have terrorized this toilet Earth, taking the inspiration from such pioneering shock rockers like KISS and ALICE COOPER and amping it up by a million. Right before throwing us pieces of human filth into the Slave Pit, vocalist Oderus Urungus gave us a few moments of his time. Mr. Urungus is full of opinions ranging from the political, preverted, cultural, and was more than happy to spew them in our direction. Of course no episode of this nature would be complete without a chat covering the Gwar gamut: from their punk roots, their one of a kind live experiece, and their recent charity work. • Episode 245: 2012 Rammy Awards: 01/8/13
Generally fans of aggressive music have little regard for the typical year end award ceremonies. We have a tendecy to view these so called "awards" as nothing but self congratulatory tripe used to further the corporate agenda. Radioactive Metal has no agenda but promote our beloved music and share our little pieces of it. With that, welcome to our 6th Annual Rammy Awards! These are kind of Radioactive Metal's piss take on the Grammy awards. Essentially this is the opportunity for the two biggest Metalheads in the game to share their faves in the categories that are most important to Metal itself. We share our picks for Fave Band, Album, Song, Live, News Story, Indie/New Band, and of course, induct those most deserving into the Radioactive Metal Hall Of Fame. • Episode 246: From The Gallows - Gallows interview: 01/6/13
In more ways than one, it's appropiate that we should wrap up 2012 by featuring British hardcore frontrunner GALLOWS. The breakthrough success of the band was a major story this past year capturing the attention of the Metal world. It's no coincidence that this banner year should coincide with the arrival of new(ish) vocalist Wade McNeil. Canadian fans will remember Mr. McNeil from his tenure with ALEXISONFIRE, doubling the cool factor of speaking with him on the band's recent stop in town. He was eager to speak about all the goings on in the Gallows camp and particularily the rather - umm - unique artwork on their latest record. Montreal metallers CHARIOTS OF THE GODS have the honor of being 2012's final Indie Spotlight artists. We expect big things from them in the new year. 2012 is swinging from the gallows. Horns Up! Scratch another one off the old Bucket List. Our interest in British grindcore innovators NAPALM DEATH dates back to the band's very first album in our mid teens. For over a quarter of a century now, Napalm Death has been a frontrunner in the Extreme Metal sweepstakes and has influenced a whole generation. During their last trip thru town, we caught up with long time vocalist Barney Greenway and discussed their place within the underground, politics, and exchanged our mutual love of the Dead Kennedys. Musically, we crank some Napalm (giving nazi punks the big "F" off) and showcase electro metallers HONOUR CREST in our Indie Spotlight. • Episode 243: Getting Wasted - Municipal Waste interview: 12/16/12
Maybe around the RAM offices we're just a little out of touch with the hip new lingo. Years ago, the "Metalcore" sound was vastly different than what it is considered to be today. The original sound in the mid 80s was the melding of HM with hardcore/punk. It created a sub genre all it's own whose sound is still having an impact on artists today. Waving the old school Metalcore flag is Virginia thrashers MUNICIPAL WASTE. We recently hung out with vocalist Tony Foresta and later joined by bassist LandPhil discussing the Wasted camp, Phil's side project CANNABIS CORPSE, and shared a little love for their late friend Cory Smoot. Musically, we dine the Waste's (as Odererus Urungus affectionately refers to them as) latest platter "The Fatal Feast" and introduce British bashers BLOODLOSS in our Indie Spotlight. Plus all our News, Views, and Tunes with a report from the Geoff Tate solo tour and the latest chapter in the Randy Blythe fiasco. Let's get Wasted!!! Horns up!!! • Episode 242: Creepy Christmas - The Creepshow interviews: 12/10/12
The Christmas Season may be in full swing but RAM has the tendency to retain the spirit of Halloween all year 'round. It's in this spirit that we recently sat down with Canadian psychobilly ghoulies, THE CREEPSHOW. It's an interesting conversation that we're proud to say the Creepers later confessed to be the best interview they ever had. We discussed their love of Extreme Metal, their connection to Rue Morgue magazine, and a curse placed on the band to which RAM used it's Wiccan witchcraft to exorcize. Ha! Even the "dark side' can't mess with us! Given the spirit of this episode, it's only appropriate that we feature a band monickered like British extreme metallers AGHAST! in our Indie Spotlight. All this plus our usual News, Views, and Tunes including saying goodbye to the man that discovered Hendrix. Horns up up for that, Dude! • Episode 241: Alfred Headbanger Presents... The Birds - Gypsyhawk, Eagle Claw interviews: 12/3/12
The mighty Metal Blade are securing their future by looking into the past. Recent signing Gypsyhawk are a cool "retro" rock band with love for the 70s. That suites the classic rocker in us just fine. When the band recently flew through town, axeman Andrew Packer was cool enough to shriek and caw with us promoting their new record "Revelry And Resilience". Flocking with them on the road is Texas instru-metalheads Eagle Claw! They really impressed us so we decided to feature them in one of our extended Indie Spotlights. I guess you could say this episode was "for the birds". All this plus our usual News, Views and Tunes, including getting drenched by Gwar and more of our musical buddies getting signed to big labels.
